KANDHA SHASHTI OBEISANCE

Kandha Shashti Obeisance (Vratam) is a sacred Hindu religious observance dedicated to Lord Muruga, known as Karthikeya or Skandha. It is observed on the sixth day (Shashti) of the lunar month in the Tamil calendar, typically in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October-November). The festival starts after Deepavali Day and lasts for six days, culminating on the sixth day (Shashti day).

The origin of Kandha Shashti Vratam is associated with the defeat of the demon brothers Surapadman and Tarakasura by Lord Muruga. It is believed that Lord Muruga, with the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, vanquished the demons after a fierce battle on the sixth day (Shashti).

There is no set rule for how one should observe the obeisance. Many followers observe a six-day fast during the Kandha Shashti period and eat one meal a day. Some people choose to abstain from certain foods or practice complete fasting. Special prayers and rituals are performed on all six days. The fast is broken on the sixth (Shashti) day after the main puja.

Kandha Shashti Vratam is considered auspicious for seeking the blessings of Lord Muruga for protection, courage, and victory over obstacles. It is believed to cleanse the mind and body, fostering spiritual growth and devotion. Devotees engage in spiritual disciplines during these six days, such as reading scriptures, singing hymns in praise of Lord Muruga, and attending special prayers or bhajans.

The Kandha Shashti Vratam culminates on the Shashti day with special prayers, processions, and offerings. Devotees express their devotion and seek the divine blessings of Lord Muruga for protection, well-being, and the removal of obstacles in their lives.

One of the central components of the observance is the recitation of the Kandha Shashti Kavcham, hymns composed in praise of Lord Muruga. Sri Devaraya Swamigal has composed six Kandha shashti kavacham for each arupadai veedu (six abodes of Murugan). Devotees believe that chanting these hymns with devotion helps in seeking the protection and blessings of the deity.

It is believed that there are six demonic qualities (Desire, Anger, Delusion, Arrogance, Jealousy, Laziness) exist as obstacles in the minds of humans. Reciting and meditating upon these six kavachams bestow the grace to lead a virtuous life in a divine state.
