Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community, particularly in countries with a significant Tamil population such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore. This festival usually takes place in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February) and is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of wisdom, war, and victory. This day is significant in Hindu mythology because it commemorates the moment when Goddess Parvathy handed her son Lord Muruga a heavenly spear known as Vel(வேல்).

The mythical story states that Lord Muruga was selected to defeat the demon Soorapadman because he constituted a threat to the gods. Goddess Parvathy gave Muruga the potent Vel, a holy spear, to help him in this fight.

Lord Murugan’s divine spear(Vel – வேல்) is not only a weapon but in the philosophical context often referred to as the symbol of wisdom. The shape of the spear is sharp, broad, and deep from top to bottom which represents the three attributes of wisdom. Refer to the line Azhndhu Agandra Nunniyane (ஆழ்ந்து அகன்ற நுண்ணியனே) in Sivapuranam by Manickavasagar.

The devotees consider this divine spear (Vel) as Lord Muruga himself. There are a few temples where the divine spear (Vel) is the main deity instead of Murugan. This spear is equally revered as Lord Muruga as we see in many scriptures. Many great saints like Arunagirinathar and Pamban Swamigal have sung about the importance of Vel in Murga worship. Arunagirinathar’s Vel Viruththam and Vel Vaguppu are noteworthy.

Vallimalai Sachidananda Swamigal, took Saint Arunagirinathar’s Vel Vaguppu and rearranged the sixteen verses in different combinations into 64 verses called Vel Maaral (வேல் மாறல்). Vel Maaral has shown to be a successful pain reliever for people. It has become a widely accessible spiritual guide for overcoming many obstacles, including mental health disorders. Nowadays, reciting Vel Maral still has a lot of benefits for many.

Here is Arunagirinathar’s Vel Vaguppu lyrics in Tamil and English:

In the following YouTube video, you could pay attention to the Vel Maral recital and revel in how Vallimalai Swamigal transformed the above Arunagirinathar`s Vel Vaguppu into Vel Maaral Mantra:

Let us celebrate Thaipusam and get the blessings of Lord Muruga, by reciting Vel Maaral!
